Cooper Flagg Shatters LeBron James Teenage Scoring Record With 42 Points In Mavericks Loss

Dallas Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg has entered rare company in NBA history, surpassing one of LeBron James’ earliest records while still only 18 years old. Flagg scored 42 points against the Utah Jazz, setting a new benchmark for the most points in a single game by a teenager. Despite his achievement, the Mavericks fell 140–133, continuing a difficult season that now stands at 10–17.

Flagg’s performance included seven rebounds, six assists, and two blocks, making him only the third teenager to record at least 40 points, five rebounds, and five assists in one contest. The other two players to accomplish this feat are James and Kevin Durant, placing Flagg among elite company.

Earlier in the game, Cooper Flagg also broke James’ record for most points in a half by an 18‑year‑old, scoring 24 before halftime. James had set the mark in December 2003, just days before his 19th birthday, when he tallied 32 points against the Portland Trail Blazers for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Flagg’s 42 points eclipsed James’ previous high of 37 as an 18‑year‑old, underscoring the significance of his breakout night.

Although Flagg’s individual numbers were historic, his focus remained on team results. “Obviously, we didn’t win. So, it’s tough for me to want to be happy or any of that,” Cooper Flagg said afterward. He acknowledged mistakes during the game and emphasized his commitment to daily improvement. “I’m not really focused on a lot of that stuff [the records]. I’m more just focused on being present, day to day,” he added.

Coach’s Perspective on Flagg’s Rapid Development

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd praised the rookie’s growth and highlighted how quickly he is adapting to the league. “The more time he spends on the floor, the more he sees, the better he gets,” Kidd said. He noted that Flagg’s ability to score, rebound, and distribute in such a high‑pressure setting reflects his potential to become a cornerstone for Dallas.

Flagg’s recent form has been consistent, averaging 25.7 points across his last seven games. His ability to combine scoring with playmaking has given the Mavericks a spark, even as the team struggles to climb the standings.
