Negotiations between the Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga are unlikely to have a happy ending this NBA offseason. According to journalist Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints on Thursday, the 22-year-old winger is unlikely to receive a contract extension and can play in the 2025-26 season under the qualifying offer of US$ 7.9 million.
“There is no indication that the Warriors intend to change their offer, and unless that happens within the next week, Kuminga is prepared to end talks and accept the qualifying offer,” Siegel reported.

Should he choose to play under his $7.9 million contract, Kuminga will become an unrestricted free agent next offseason, free to sign with any other team in the league. However, his departure would be a severe blow to the Warriors, who would lose the young player without any significant return.
The winger is currently available on the market as a restricted free agent, allowing Golden State to match any offer from other teams to avoid losing the player. The franchise and the player have been in negotiations since the beginning of the offseason, but a deal has never been close.

The Warriors offered a two-year, $45 million contract with a team option for the second year and a requirement that Kuminga waive a no-trade clause. The proposal didn’t please the player, who felt he would lose control over his own future.
“At the end of the day, Kuminga wants to feel valued, and the Warriors haven’t given him enough reasons to want to stay,” Siegel added.
Other NBA teams expressed interest in trading for the player, notably the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings. However, the offers presented to Golden State were not satisfactory, and negotiations did not progress.
The impasse with Jonathan Kuminga is one of the main reasons for the Californian franchise’s lack of activity this NBA offseason . The organization’s front office is awaiting the conclusion of negotiations with the forward to better understand the available salary cap space and, based on that, move forward with signings for next season.
Despite not having signed any reinforcements yet, the Warriors have shown interest in veterans Al Horford and Malcolm Brogdon.
