Houston Rockets Pull Off an Upset on OKC Thunder, thanks to Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun

The Rockets duo went off to snap OKC Thunder's 11-game win streak.

Houston Rockets, second in the Western Conference, pulled off an upset on top-seed Oklahoma City Thunder with a 125-111 victory Friday night. Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun combined for 65 points and Houston snapped Oklahoma City’s 11-game winning streak.

The Rockets already cliched the playoff spot after winning their 50th game of the season Wednesday night against the Utah Jazz. It marked their first 50-win season since 2018-19, but victory against the Thunder assured one thing: they won’t settle for the playoffs only. Houston now holds a three-game lead over the Lakers and the Nuggets for the second seed in the West standings.

The Rockets had a terrific start to the game and outscored the Thunder 69-53 in the first half. With a 10-2 run in the third quarter, Houston extended the lead to 20 points. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored eight in his team’s late 12-3 run and Oklahoma City cut the lead to 96-85 entering the fourth.

The Thunder reduced the deficit to single digits multiple times in the fourth period. Green scored five points in a 7-2 spurt midway through the quarter and the Thunder didn’t get within single digits again. Thompson blocked Gilgeous-Alexander’s jumper with 3:27 left, and Sengun’s dunk a minute later stretched the lead to 122-108.

The Rockets improved to 2/3 against the Thunder with the win. Jalen Green scored 34 points, and Alperen Sengun added 31. Amen Thompson contributed 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Steven Adams grabbed 12 rebounds. Jabari Smith Jr. tallied nine points and 17 rebounds off the bench for Houston, who improved to 51-27 in the West.

Jalen Williams paced the Thunder with 33 points on 13-for-21 shooting and Gilgeous-Alexander chipped in 22. The latter reached at least 20 points for the 70th straight game, surpassing Michael Jordan for the fourth-longest single-season streak in league history. Chet Holmgren dropped 6 3-pointers and added 20 points for the Oklahoma City.
