The 2024-25 season is approaching its end, and with each passing day, the competition between teams to clinch remaining playoff spots is intensifying. A total of five teams have made it to the post-season so far.
The Cleveland Cavaliers became the first team to secure an NBA 2024-25 playoff berth, accompanied by the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and the Indiana Pacers in the East. However, in the West, only the Oklahoma City Thunder have officially booked a playoff seat.
On the other hand, teams like the Toronto Raptors, the Brooklyn Nets, and the Utah Jazz have already been eliminated from the race.
As it is known, the NBA playoffs begin in April with teams a total of 16 teams, eight in the East and 8 in the west, competing for the ultimate title, the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.
While top six seeds in each conference are decided on the basis of their regular-season performance, remaining two are decided from the play-in tournament. Having said that, let’s have a look at its meaning as well as how it works.
The play-in tournament is an NBA post-season tournament which determines the final two seeds in the postseason of both the conferences. The tournament enables the teams that might have been eliminated from the playoffs to give another shot to secure a spot in the top eight. Needless to say, the inclusion of the play-in tournament not only offers a second chance for a few teams but also adds intensity to the remainder of the season.
With the inclusion of the play-in tournament, fans get to witness some of the most thrilling games of the season, compelling teams to put in their best show.
The teams that finish the regular season from seventh to the tenth position participate in the play-in tournament. It determines the number seven and eight seeds in each conference’s bracket tournament.
The NBA play-in tournament was officially introduced in the 2020-21 season to add a more competitive approach to the playoff tournament. Before its implementation, the teams that finished top eight of each conference would automatically qualify for the playoffs, leading to less or very little drama in the final week of the season.

The league first experimented with the tournament during the 2020 bubble in Orlando. Its success encouraged the league to implement in the season.

The format for the NBA play-in tournament is similar to the first two rounds of the Page-McIntyre system for a four-team playoff. In a play-in tournament, the 7th seeded team hosts the 8th seed team in the double-chance game. The winners will advance as the seventh seed in the playoff standings.
The loser of the game will host the winner of the game between the ninth and the tenth seed. The winner of the game will then move ahead to receive the eighth seed. Following that, the playoffs proceed as normal.

The 2024-25 regular season is scheduled to come to an end on April 13. The Play-In tournament for the 2024-25 season is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, April 18 to Friday, April 18. The play-off season will begin on April 19, with the Western Conference Finals scheduled to take place on June 1.
On June 2, the NBA will host the Eastern Conference Finals. The seven-game Finals series will begin on June 5, with the last game set to be played on June 22.
