Boston Celtics vs. New York Knicks: Injuries and likely starting lineups

Defending champions set to lock horns with new-look Knicks.

The new NBA season opens with a much-anticipated clash between the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks on Tuesday, October 22, at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The reigning champion Celtics return to defend their title, hosting a retooled Knicks squad that made waves in the trade market.

With both teams eager to make a statement, let’s dive into each roster and project the likely starting lineups for this exciting season opener.

Celtics Team News and Predicted Lineup

After a remarkable championship run to secure Banner 18, the Boston Celtics now face high expectations to repeat—a feat they haven’t achieved since the 1968–69 season.

Boston’s core roster remains largely intact, with the notable absences of Oshae Brissett and Svi Mykhailiuk. In the offseason, the Celtics strengthened their lineup by adding former Nets guard Lonnie Walker IV and rookie guard Baylor Scheierman, drafted at No. 30.

However, the season will start without Kristaps Porzingis, who is recovering from foot surgery. His return is projected for December, leaving Boston to begin their title defense with a slightly altered rotation.

Predicted Starting 5:

Jrue Holiday

Derrick White

Jaylen Brown

Jayson Tatum

Al Horford

Knicks Team News and Predicted Lineup

The Knicks made waves this offseason, beginning with the trade for Mikal Bridges, reuniting him with Villanova alums Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. Paired with OG Anunoby, Bridges adds defensive strength and versatility, giving New York a formidable lineup of two-way forwards.

Julius Randle, meanwhile, found himself on the outside looking in as the Knicks thrived without him during their playoff run. This prompted a key move, sending Randle and Donte DiVincenzo to Minnesota in exchange for Karl-Anthony Towns, who brings both defensive and floor-spacing abilities to the roster.

As the season approaches, the Knicks face a few injury setbacks. Guard Landry Shamet will miss significant time after a shoulder injury suffered during a preseason win against the Hornets. Center Mitchell Robinson is also sidelined with an ankle injury, leaving New York to adjust its rotation.

Predicted Starting 5:

Jalen Brunson

Josh Hart

Mikal Bridges

OG Anunoby

Karl-Anthony Towns
