All the EuroBasket 2025 Round of 16 matchups have been confirmed! This Thursday, the final round of the first phase took place, with the conclusion of groups C and D. Luka Doncic and Slovenia secured their third consecutive victory, while the current tournament champion, Spain, had a surprising exit from the group stage. Both teams entered the final round with identical records of two wins and two losses. In the end, Bosnia prevailed, as they were superior for much of the game and qualified in third place. The Balkans opened up a strong lead thanks to collective play and strong perimeter shooting (14 of 32). Jusuf Nurkic, now with the Utah Jazz, had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Point guard John Roberson also scored 15 points.
Georgia, meanwhile, never led the score, but managed to tie the score in the final quarter. Despite the loss, they secured the final spot in Group C for the round of 16, beating Spain in a head-to-head match. The team’s standout performer so far, Sandro Mamukelashvili of the Toronto Raptors, had 20 points and eight rebounds. Bayern Munich point guard Kamar Baldwin contributed 18 more points.
Concluding its participation in Group D, France lived up to expectations and easily defeated Iceland, securing the top spot in the group. Zaccharie Risacher, the first pick in the 2024 Draft by the Atlanta Hawks, had 15 points and seven rebounds. The Icelanders, in turn, said goodbye to EuroBasket 2025 without a single win. However, in the official standings, they finished 22nd, the country’s highest-ever finish in three appearances.
Luka Doncic never ceases to impress. In yet another dominant performance, the Los Angeles Lakers star left his mark and once again took home the Player of the Match award. His 37 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists kept Slovenia, ranked third in Group D, comfortably ahead throughout the match. With 21 EuroBasket matches under his belt, the point guard is averaging 22.5 points, the fourth-highest in history. Just above him is the legendary Drazen Petrovic, with 23.2 in 26 matches.
In their first EuroBasket appearance, the Cypriot hosts finished the competition winless and in last place among all 24 participating teams. None of this mattered to the fans, who gave the national team a standing ovation after the loss to Italy. Young Filippos Tigkas, a 23-year-old point guard, was Cyprus’s standout performer in the tournament, scoring 15 points and grabbing six rebounds in his farewell match.
The Italians, on the other hand, bounced back from a loss to Greece in their opening match and won their next four matches, securing second place in Group C. In the round of 16, however, they will face Luka Doncic’s Slovenia. 22-year-old Matteo Spagnolo had 13 points, seven rebounds, and five assists in the final round of the first round. The same number of points as Miami Heat’s Simone Fontecchio. Veteran Danilo Gallinari, 37, had 12 points and five rebounds.
Defending EuroBasket champions Spain entered the final round desperately needing a win. However, they couldn’t contain one of the tournament’s biggest stars so far: Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Milwaukee Bucks star flirted with a triple-double, tallying 25 points, 14 rebounds, and nine assists. Tyler Dorsey also stood out with 22 points and five rebounds. Greece, the group’s top seed, faces Israel in the round of 16.
The Spanish spent much of the game chasing the deficit, but managed to take the lead on two separate occasions in the fourth quarter. However, they will spend a good deal of time regretting their 16 missed free throws in the match. With the loss, they finish in 17th place, their lowest result in the competition’s history. The good news comes from the strong performances of some of their new generation, such as Santi Aldama (Memphis Grizzlies), Mario Saint-Supery (Gonzaga University), and Jaime Pradilla (Valencia).
In the game that closed the day, a thrilling final quarter concluded the EuroBasket group stage. The home team managed to take a lead from Belgium that reached double digits. In the end, they led 12 points and tied 11. The final, and most important, lead change came with three seconds left on the clock. The Belgians were trailing by one point when Emmanuel Lecomte, the game’s leading scorer with 19 points, dribbled past Michal Sokolowski, rose from midrange, and turned the score around.
Despite the victory, Belgium finished fifth in the group and failed to advance to the knockout stage. The Poles finished second and will face Bosnia in the round of 16.
