La saison 2023 des Padres prend la forme d’une réelle déception après avoir été jusqu’en NLCS l’an dernier.<\/h2>

Bien sûr, tant que le dernier match n’a pas été joué, rien n’est terminé. Mais leur bilan actuel 65-74 et les 6.5 matchs de retard pour une dernière place en Wild Card n’indique rien de bon même après 3 victoires de rang.<\/p>

La franchise, 3è plus grosse masse salariale de la MLB cette année, voit une inter-saison pleine de défis et de décisions importante à prendre à plusieurs niveau. Blake Snell, l’as des Padres, a évoqué sa volonté de rester au sein de la franchise après une saison excellente, qui lui vaudra peut-être le Cy Young.<\/p>

Mais un joueur apparait comme un nouveau casse-tête pour la franchise : Juan Soto<\/p>

Profiter de sa valeur ?<\/h3>

À 25 ans, Juan Soto a encore une année de contrat avant de devenir agent libre. L’été dernier, les Padres ont sorti le grand jeu pour faire venir celui qui ne voulait plus rester à Washington malgré une proposition mirobolante.<\/p>

Le Juan Soto<\/strong><\/a> version Padres n’est pas exactement celui des Nationals en 2019 ou 2021. Malgré tout, Soto reste une vraie force au bâton avec toujours un slugging percentage très élevé et un OPS qui s’approche des 1.000.<\/p>

Cette saison, Juan Soto concède plus de strikeout qu’à l’accoutumée même en étant parmi les plus patient au marbre de la ligue. Son jeune âge laisse donc présager encore des saisons où il peut activement contribuer à un alignement.<\/p>

Avec 28 home runs, il se rapproche de son record en carrière qui est de 34 en 2019.<\/p>

Dennis Lin de The Athletic<\/a> souligne cependant un point important :<\/p>

« Le voltigeur et son agent Scott Boras envisagerait-il même d’accepter moins que l’offre de 440 millions de dollars sur 15 ans des Nationals qu’ils ont refusée en 2022 ? »<\/p><\/blockquote>

En ajoutant : « probablement pas ».<\/p>

Et c’est une variable importante à prendre en considération pour les Padres alors que d’autres joueurs devront (ou pas) être prolongés notamment chez les lanceurs. Juan Soto a de la valeur et même si les Padres n’obtiendront sans doute pas l’équivalent de ce qu’ils ont envoyé aux Nationals, l’option se calcule.<\/p>

Toujours selon Dennis Lin, plusieurs rumeurs font état de proposition de prolongation qui n’ont pas encore reçu de réponse de la part du clan Soto.<\/p>

Parier sur l’avenir<\/h3>

Tout va donc dépendre de la direction que souhaite prendre la franchise pour son avenir proche. Avec Machado, 31 ans, et Xander Bogaerts, 30 ans, l’avenir des Padres se situe donc plutôt du côté des Fernando Tatis Jr et Juan Soto.<\/p>

En verrouillant Soto sur les 10 prochaines années, les Padres auront sous la main deux frappeurs au talent indéniable.<\/p>

San Diego doit voir au delà de cette saison en terme de performance pour construire son alignement futur. La jeunesse de ces joueurs est sans doute le facteur principal à prendre en compte. L’exemple des Orioles cette saison est suffisamment parlant pour ne pas le prendre en compte.<\/p>
