Pour certains joueurs, les rencontres internationales de la NFL représentent bien plus qu’un simple déplacement. C’est le cas de Matt Gay, le kicker des Washington Commanders, qui s’apprête à vivre un moment unique dimanche au stade Santiago Bernabéu de Madrid. Ancien prodige du football… version soccer, le kicker voit dans cette affiche de la semaine 11<\/a> face aux Miami Dolphins un rêve d’enfant devenu réalité.<\/p>

Matt Gay, un habitué jamais rassasié des matchs internationaux<\/h2>

Avant de se tourner vers le ballon ovale, Gay a passé la majeure partie de sa jeunesse crampons aux pieds à taper dans un ballon rond. Il a longtemps visé une carrière en Europe, avec l’ambition de rejoindre un jour la Premier League ou la Liga. <\/p>

« Jouer au Bernabéu, c’est incroyable. Je n’aurais jamais imaginé que ce serait pour un match de football américain, mais c’est un rêve qui se réalise » confie-t-il, enthousiaste<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>

Ce ne sera pas la première expérience internationale du kicker. En 2019, il évoluait à Tampa Bay lorsque les Buccaneers ont affronté les Panthers à Londres, dans l’antre de Tottenham, son club préféré de jeunesse. Puis en 2023, sous les couleurs des Colts, il a participé au match de Francfort contre les Patriots. Mais fouler la pelouse du Real Madrid a une saveur particulière pour l’ancien attaquant qu’il était, inspiré autrefois par Cristiano Ronaldo, Dimitar Berbatov ou encore Karim Benzema.<\/p>

Un choix à l’université<\/h2>

Repéré dans sa jeunesse par la Fédération américaine de soccer, Gay avait pourtant bifurqué vers le football américain à l’université de l’Utah, avant d’être drafté en 2019. Un parcours atypique qui trouve un écho particulier dans ce match à Madrid, dernier rendez-vous international d’une saison NFL plus mondialisée que jamais.<\/p>

Même au sein de l’équipe, l’excitation est palpable. Le punter Tress Way compare l’événement à jouer dans les stades légendaires des Yankees ou des Packers. Pour les Commanders, comme pour Matt Gay, l’Europe offre une scène unique, et cette fois, un décor mythique.<\/p>
