L’ancien joueur vedette des Chicago Cubs et membre du Hall of Fame du baseball, Ryne Sandberg, est décédé ce lundi<\/a> à l’âge de 65 ans. La franchise a annoncé qu’il était entouré de sa famille à son domicile au moment de son décès.<\/p>

Sandberg avait révélé en janvier 2024 être atteint d’un cancer de la prostate métastatique. Bien que déclaré en rémission en août de la même année après des traitements intensifs, il annonçait en décembre une rechute, avec propagation à d’autres organes. Malgré un combat acharné, l’un des visages les plus emblématiques de la MLB<\/a> s’est éteint, laissant derrière lui un héritage immense.<\/p>

Une carrière immense pour un joueur iconique<\/h2>

Né à Spokane dans l’état de Washington, Ryne Sandberg fut repêché par les Philadelphia Phillies en 1978. Mais c’est avec les Chicago Cubs, où il fut échangé en 1982, qu’il écrira les plus belles pages de sa carrière. Ce transfert, longtemps considéré comme l’un des plus déséquilibrés de l’histoire, a permis aux Cubs de bénéficier d’un joueur d’exception pendant 15 saisons.<\/p>

Avec une moyenne de .285, 282 home runs, 1 061 points produits et 344 bases volées, Ryne Sandberg a marqué son époque. Il a été dix fois All-Star, remporté neuf Golden Gloves, et a été sacré MVP de la Ligue nationale en 1984. Son match du 23 juin 1984 face aux Cardinals, au cours duquel il a frappé deux homeruns décisifs, est encore considéré comme l’un des moments cultes de l’histoire des Cubs: The Sandberg Game<\/em>.<\/p>

Malgré son excellence individuelle, les Cubs n’ont atteint les playoffs qu’à deux reprises pendant son passage, en 1984 et 1989.<\/p>

La postérité de Ryne Sandberg<\/h2>

En 2005, Sandberg est intronisé au Hall of Fame avec 76,2 % des voix. Les Cubs retirent son célèbre numéro 23 la même année. En 2024, une statue à son effigie a été inaugurée devant le Wrigley Field, stade des Chicago Cubs.<\/p>

Après sa carrière de joueur, il devient brièvement manager des Phillies entre 2013 et 2015.<\/p>

Respecté pour sa rigueur, son humilité et son dévouement au jeu, Ryne Sandberg restera dans l’histoire comme l’un des plus grands joueurs de deuxième base de la MLB. Un superhéros discret, mais inoubliable.<\/p>
