Le College Football Playoff (CFP) risque d’aborder la saison 2025 sans vision claire de son avenir pour les saisons suivantes. <\/p>

Alors que les responsables du CFP ont validé une nouvelle formule de classement direct (sans distinction automatique de conférence) pour la saison à venir, aucun accord n’a encore été trouvé concernant la structure du format à partir de 2026, date à laquelle le nouveau contrat de droits TV avec ESPN prendra effet. <\/p>

Une échéance cruciale approche : le CFP doit notifier ESPN avant le 1er décembre 2025 de tout changement dans son format, y compris une éventuelle expansion du nombre d’équipes qualifiées. Si la plupart des acteurs des Power 4 (Big Ten, SEC, ACC et Big 12) semblent favorables à une extension du tournoi de 12 à 16 équipes, aucun consensus n’émerge sur les modalités de qualification. <\/p>

Le 18 juin marquera la dernière réunion prévue du comité de gestion du CFP composé des commissaires des conférences FBS et du directeur sportif de Notre Dame, Pete Bevacqua avant le coup d’envoi de la saison le 23 août (Week Zero). Faute de décision d’ici là, une session extraordinaire devra être organisée cet été pour éviter que le débat ne perturbe le déroulement de la saison. <\/p>

Quel format est envisagé ? <\/h2>

Lors des réunions de printemps des conférences Power 4, un certain élan s’est formé autour d’un modèle “5+11” : les 5 champions de conférence les mieux classés seraient automatiquement qualifiés, accompagnés des 11 meilleures équipes restantes au classement général. <\/p>

Cependant, des divergences majeures subsistent, notamment en ce qui concerne l’équilibre du calendrier. Les équipes de la Big Ten et de la Big 12 disputent chacune neuf matchs de conférence par saison, tandis que celles de la SEC et de l’ACC n’en jouent que huit, ce qui rend les classements et qualifications plus complexes.<\/p>

À noter aussi qu’En 2024, les 12 équipes qualifiées pour les CFP ont versé un total de 27 millions de dollars<\/a> aux programmes des Group of Five et de FCS pour leurs matchs hors conférence. Un aspect capital du calendrier non négligeable qui pourrait aussi peser dans la balance des futures discussions.<\/p>
