Karl-Anthony Towns était arrivé pour compenser le départ du solide défenseur Isaiah Hartenstein (parti à Oklahoma City) en échange de Julius Randle, afin de booster l’attaque new-yorkaise. Mais très vite, les limites de ce choix sont apparues, notamment sur le plan défensif. Au fil de la saison, la différence de solidité défensive entre Hartenstein et Towns est devenue de plus en plus flagrante.<\/p>

La frustration grandit autour de KAT<\/h2>

Malgré un gabarit de pivot et des qualités athlétiques indéniables, l’impact défensif de Karl-Anthony Towns laisse à désirer. L’élimination des Knicks en finale de conférence face aux Pacers est d’ailleurs en partie due à cet aspect du jeu.<\/p>

Selon The Athletic<\/a>, les Knicks ont été de plus en plus agacés par les « mauvaises habitudes défensives » de Towns. Ce dernier est accusé de trop souvent réaliser des couvertures inadaptées, sans communiquer avec ses coéquipiers. Et quand ce comportement est devenu récurrent, certains dans l’effectif ont commencé à douter de sa compréhension des enjeux défensifs. PJ Tucker, présent en NBA depuis 2006 et arrivé en fin de saison pour apporter son expérience, a résumé la situation après le Game 1 contre Boston :<\/p>

« Ils me parlent à moi, mais ils ne se parlent pas entre eux dans l’instant, quand il faut. »<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>

Les chiffres confirment cette tendance : en saison régulière, la défense des Knicks encaissait 2,8 points de moins pour 100 possessions quand Towns était sur le banc. En playoffs, l’écart s’est réduit, mais le pivot s’est montré inefficace en drop coverage, souvent puni par des tirs à mi-distance, et également dépassé en un-contre-un lorsque ce dernier devait switcher.<\/p>

L’avenir de Towns à New York déjà remis en question ?<\/h3>

Si Towns n’a jamais été un protecteur d’arceau d’élite, le pivot a déjà évolué dans des défenses solides, notamment l’an passé avec les Timberwolves, n°1 NBA dans ce domaine, mais dans un rôle d’ailier fort.<\/p>

Avec le retour de blessure de Mitchell Robinson, New York pourrait envisager de repositionner Towns au poste 4. Mais vu les tensions internes évoquées, l’option d’un nouveau trade ne serait pas à écarter non plus. Les Knicks disposent à nouveau d’un pivot défensif solide en la personne de Robinson, et pourraient chercher à l’associer à un intérieur plus fiable sur le plan défensif que Towns.<\/p>

Alors que New York est en vacances à présent, les dirigeants de la franchise devraient bien avoir à trancher cet été afin d’aborder au mieux la saison prochaine.<\/p>
