« Coup de poignard. »<\/strong><\/p>

C’est l’expression qu’Aaron Boone réserve généralement pour les pires défaites. Et à ce rythme, il pourrait aussi bien la graver sur le mur de l’abri des Yankees. Car si l’effondrement de lundi soir est un avant-goût de la saison à venir, les fans doivent se préparer à une longue et pénible année, où même une avance de trois points ne garantit rien.<\/p>

Malgré leurs faiblesses — une rotation incertaine, une attaque irrégulière — les Yankees étaient censés pouvoir compter sur leur relève. C’est ce qui a rendu la signature de Devin Williams en décembre si excitante. <\/p>

Aujourd’hui ? Cela ressemble plutôt à un pari en train de tourner au fiasco.<\/p>

Déchu de son rôle de closer il y a à peine une semaine, Williams s’est retrouvé dans une autre situation sous haute pression lundi soir. Le résultat ? Le chaos. Et une nouvelle débâcle. Le lanceur de 30 ans a concédé trois points mérités en huitième manche, transformant une avance de 3-0 en une défaite 4-3 contre les Padres, sous une pluie battante au Yankee Stadium. Après deux buts sur balles, un simple et seulement deux retraits, Boone en avait vu assez. Williams a quitté le monticule sous les huées, les bases pleines.<\/p>

Et les choses ne se sont pas arrangées.<\/p>

Luke Weaver, jusque-là irréprochable en 15 manches cette saison, a cédé coup sur coup : un double de deux points signé Manny Machado puis un simple de deux points de Xander Bogaerts. Le match venait de basculer totalement.<\/p>

Encore une sortie gâchée pour Carlos Rodon. Encore une avance envolée. Encore un coup de poignard.<\/p>

Les Yankees doivent vite trouver une solution aux difficultés de Devin Williams<\/strong><\/h2>

Il s’agit déjà de la cinquième défaite des Yankees cette saison après avoir mené en huitième manche ou plus tard — le pire total de la MLB. Williams est impliqué directement dans trois de ces défaites.<\/p>

Le chiffre le plus douloureux ? 13 points mérités en 11 manches et 2\/3 lancées.<\/strong><\/p>

C’est déjà autant que ce qu’il avait concédé au total lors des deux dernières saisons réunies avec Milwaukee (80 manches 1\/3).<\/p>

    Ce n’est pas une mauvaise passe. C’est une catastrophe.<\/p>

    Les Yankees n’ont pas recruté Williams pour qu’il soit un simple setup man. Ils lui ont confié la neuvième manche, misant sur son célèbre changement de vitesse “Airbender” et sa moyenne de 1,83 en carrière pour sécuriser les victoires. Au lieu de ça, il est devenu un poids en fin de match.<\/p>

    Même le plan B de Boone n’a pas suffi. Weaver a fini par craquer et les Padres en ont profité. Le sacrifice fly d’Anthony Volpe en sixième manche, qui avait donné aux Yankees leur avance de 3-0, est vite devenu anecdotique.<\/p>

    Désormais, c’est une relève en crise et un releveur grassement payé qui ne fait plus le travail. Si les Yankees veulent rester au sommet de l’AL East, ils doivent trouver des solutions rapidement. Car si Devin Williams continue ainsi, « coup de poignard »<\/strong> pourrait bien résumer toute leur saison.<\/p>
