À New York, un homme vient d’être inculpé dans un scandale de paris sportifs qui avait conduit la NBA à bannir à vie Jontay Porter, ancien joueur des Raptors. Cette affaire marque la première conséquence pénale connue de ce dossier.<\/h2>

L’acte d’accusation ne mentionne pas directement Porter, se référant uniquement à « Player 1 », mais détaille des actes qui correspondent à la chute de l’athlète au printemps dernier. Les procureurs fédéraux de Brooklyn ont refusé de préciser si Porter était actuellement sous enquête.<\/p>

Breon Peace, procureur des États-Unis pour le district de Brooklyn, a révélé que les co-conspirateurs présumés et « Player 1 » ont pris part à « un stratagème de paris illégaux audacieux, influençant deux matchs et de nombreux paris. »<\/p>

Selon l’accusation, le joueur aurait directement communiqué avec l’accusé principal, Long Phi Pham, et d’autres coaccusés anonymes. Avec le début des investigations au printemps par la NBA et d’autres entités, le joueur aurait averti Pham et les autres le 4 avril, via une application de messagerie cryptée, de la possibilité d’une inculpation fédérale pour racket, les interrogeant s’ils avaient effacé « tous les éléments compromettants » de leurs téléphones.<\/p>

Le joueur, confronté à d’importantes dettes de jeu, aurait été incité à faire une « opération spéciale » qui est de se retirer stratégiquement du match pour favoriser certaines mises, rendant possible pour les initiés de parier sur ses contre-performances. Un message crypté révèle qu’il aurait menacé de subir des conséquences physiques s’il ne remplissait pas certaines conditions de paris.<\/p>

Pham, 38 ans, de Brooklyn, est actuellement détenu après sa comparution initiale. Accusé de conspiration pour frauder une entreprise de paris sportifs, il attend une audience sur la caution prévue pour le lendemain.<\/p>

La NBA a exclu Porter en avril, après avoir découvert qu’il avait divulgué des informations confidentielles sur sa santé à un parieur et qu’il avait utilisé le compte d’une autre personne pour parier sur des matchs auxquels il ne participait pas. Dans un cas, il a parié contre sa propre équipe, un pari qui n’a pas réussi, révèle la NBA.<\/p>

« C’est notre responsabilité de protéger l’intégrité de nos compétitions pour nos fans, nos équipes et tous ceux liés à notre sport, ce qui justifie la sévérité de la sanction imposée à Jontay Porter pour ses violations flagrantes de nos règles sur les paris, » a déclaré Adam Silver, le commissaire de la NBA, lors de l’annonce de la suspension.<\/p><\/blockquote>
