Calls for a renewed share of league revenue and increase in salary in accordance are growing.<\/p><p>During the WNBA All-star weekend, almost all the participants in the exhibition game protested. They wore T-shirts that read, &ldquo;Pay Us What You Owe Us.&rdquo; This was during the warm-up. The protest was sparked after league officials failed to meet the players&rsquo; salary and revenue demands during ongoing CBA negotiations.<\/p><p>WNBA players are pushing for a significant salary hike tied directly to the league&rsquo;s annual revenue figures. However, the math is not as simple as it sounds. This comes despite the NBA injecting millions of dollars annually to keep the WNBA afloat. WNBA players have consistently compared their pay with NBA stars, demanding a similar structure.<\/p><p>WNBA players are demanding a pay structure similar to the NBA, where athletes earn half of league revenue. In the NBA, players have an earning cap of 50 percent of the revenue, while the other half goes to the ownership. Here&rsquo;s why WNBA players are wrong in demanding a similar pay structure.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the Numbers Shape WNBA Salaries<\/h2><p>The WNBA controls only 42 percent of its revenue stream, with other parts being financed by the NBA and a small group of outside investors. Which is why demanding a 50 percent revenue share is never going to work out for the players.<\/p><p>Of the 42% of revenue the league controls, most goes to ownership groups still reeling from years of losses. How much are they going to give up? Not so much as they have to cover their books as well, which remains in minus since decades.<\/p><p>While WNBA viewership has improved, the league&rsquo;s business model continues to operate without turning a profit. Until and unless that happens, the players will need to take what is on the table.
