After a quick turnaround from the French Open where the seeds dominated proceedings, there have been seismic shocks at the All England Club. The likes of Coco Gauff, Alexander Zverev, Jessica Pegula, Daniil Medvedev, Zheng Qinwen and dozens of others crashed out early on.

There were a record 36 seeded players in the singles draw eliminated within the opening two rounds of Wimbledon this year. This surpassed the tally of 35 at the Covid-hit 2020 French Open at the same stage. There is a quick switch between the end of Roland Garros in the beginning of June, and the end of Wimbledon in mid July. For some players, the grass court season begins before the culminating stages of the Paris major – which is still a mere 45-50 day period on grass.

Another seeded player is out in the first round of Wimbledon 🤯

Dayana Yastremska defeats Coco Gauff in straight sets!#Wimbledon pic.twitter.com/tSFAJ1RQfm
— Roland-Garros (@rolandgarros) July 1, 2025

This makes a comfortable transition into the grass court season nearly impossible. Players take time to adapt to surfaces, and there is minimal time to rest and recuperate. Additionally, the lack of a Masters-1000 event on the surface means that some of the top stars on the men’s and women’s circuits fail to receive quality preparation in the build-up to Wimbledon.

Slower Courts at Wimbledon

Upset alert 🚨

Croatia's Marin Cilic stuns Jack Draper 6-4, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 to knock the No.4 seed out of The Championships 2025 😮#Wimbledon pic.twitter.com/rZP6NQjWRy
— Wimbledon (@Wimbledon) July 3, 2025

Owing to unusual conditions this year, the courts at Wimbledon are supposedly playing much slower than anticipated. World No. 30 Denis Shapovalov, who is a former semifinalist at this event, criticised the court conditions after being ousted in the opening round. “The grass tour has turned into a joke,” said the 26-year-old. “This isn’t grass anymore, the court is slower than a clay one.”

The 2025 edition of the competition witnessed the hottest opening day recorded at the Championships. With temperatures exceeding 30 degrees on Monday and Tuesday, both players and fans had to endure draining weather. The warmth subsequently leads to courts playing slower, as the dry grass increases friction and grip on the ball.

Heavier Tennis Balls

Although the Wimbledon organisers have confirmed that no changes have been made to balls, there have been complaints regarding the same. Shapovalov declared this year’s Slazenger balls as “the worst” after being dumped out by Argentina’s Mariano Navone in the Round of 128. Heavier and slower balls can lead to longer rallies, higher chances for defensive players to stay alive, and more fatigue for players in general.

Home favourite Emma Raducanu registered a massive win over 2023 Wimbledon champion and former Olympic silver medalist Marketa Vondrousova in Round-2. You feel like you lose a lot if you don’t show up and play – economically, points-wise and opportunity-wise.” Australian Alex de Minaur also singled out a possible burnout as the reason for his early exit from the recently concluded French Open.

New Opportunities and Favourites for the 2025 Wimbledon Titles

The mass exodus of top seeds means that some new faces have a chance to rise and shine. In the second quarter of the Ladies’ Singles draw, American 13th seed Amanda Anisimova benefits from the likes of Jasmine Paolini, Zheng Qinwen, Diana Shnaider and Jelena Ostapenko dropping out of the tournament. She will not face anyone ranked higher than No. 30 seed Linda Noskova until the semifinals – where she could meet top seed Aryna Sabalenka.

Additionally, Sonay Kartal of Great Britain is also in the same quarter as Anisimova. She is a possible opponent for the former Roland Garros semifinalist in the last eight. Argentine Solana Sierra meets the unseeded Laura Siegemund in the Round of 16 – she is vying to become the first female lucky loser in history to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal. On the men’s side, Karen Khachanov and Cameron Norrie can make it to the quarterfinal stage without having to face a seeded player.

The top seeds on both sides of the draw remain firm favourites for the championship. Russian young gun Mirra Andreeva and former champ Elena Rybakina also have a good shot at glory. I specialise in tennis and football writing at The Playoffs News, and I have prior experience working at EssentiallySports and Sportskeeda. Born and raised in Bengaluru, India, sport was my safe space right from my childhood. After trying my hand at multiple sports and representing my educational institutions in cricket, badminton and table tennis, I found sports media to be my calling. My message to the readers is not to be shy to express themselves - regardless of whether it is playing, talking or writing about sport. And if you’re a fan of Roger Federer, Lionel Messi and/or Stephen Curry - I’m your guy.
https://www.instagram.com/sankalphk","https://www.linkedin.com/in/sankalp-hk-660254215
