In 2021-22, Ime Udoka transformed the Boston Celtics in his first season as head coach, guiding them to the NBA Finals with a 51-31 record and league’s top-ranked defense. His coaching style and defensive schemes elevated stars like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, earning widespread praise from media and the rest of the league. However, Udoka was suspended and fired before the 2022-23 season due to violation of team policies, a sensitive matter that ended his Celtics tenure abruptly despite his on-court success.<\/p>

Hired by the Houston Rockets in April of 2023, Udoka inherited a team who were nowhere close to even making the playoffs, with just 59 wins across three seasons. Udoka signed a long-term contract extension with the Rockets, making him one of the NBA’s highest-paid coaches with an eight-figure annual salary, as per ESPN’s Sham Charania. The deal reflects Houston’s commitment to Udoka after he led them to 93 wins over two seasons, which is a stark contrast to just 59 wins in the three prior years. Despite a first-round playoff loss to the Golden State Warriors in 2025, Udoka’s impact, developing players like Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green, earned him a 2025 NBA Coach of the Year finalist nod.<\/p>
