McCarthy, missed the entire season due to a meniscus injury in preseason. Wentz continued to start for the Vikings in Week 7 and Week 8 against the Eagles and the Chargers following a Week 6 bye week.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Playing with a big stabilizing brace on his non-throwing left arm, Wentz kept his role under center even as J.J. McCarthy continued to recover from his ankle injury. However, Wentz was seen in noticeable pain during the Vikings&rsquo; Thursday Night Football (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/schedules\/thursday-night-football\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"trk-cta-link\" data-cta-trk='{\"ctaType\":\"Link\",\"ctaSubType\":\"main\"}'>TNF<\/a>) clash against the Chargers, and he has now decided to go under the knife.&nbsp;<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Will Be Starting for the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9?<\/h2><p>With Wentz now set to undergo surgery, Minnesota will have to place its backup signal caller on the IR list. The veteran quarterback will end up missing the remainder of the season as he continues the recovery process post-surgery.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p><p>However, the good news for the Vikings is that second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy is now expected to start Minnesota&rsquo;s Week 9 game against the Detroit Lions.
