Detroit Pistons: Unlocked a New Level<\/h2>

Last season, the Detroit Pistons were one of the biggest positive surprises in the NBA<\/a>. The team made an incredible leap and improved by 30 wins compared to 2023–24, marking one of the largest turnarounds in recent league history. Detroit finished the season at 44–38, reestablishing itself as a tough, physical team, a hallmark of Pistons basketball.<\/p>

Under new head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, Detroit found the right balance between promising young talent and overlooked veterans. The chemistry developed quickly, and the team regained that gritty, hard-nosed identity fans had long missed.<\/p>

Star guard Cade Cunningham finally broke through, earning his first All-Star selection and forming an almost unstoppable duo with big man Jalen Duren. Meanwhile, veterans Malik Beasley, Tobias Harris, and Dennis Schroder played key roles in helping the team reach the playoffs directly for the first time since 2018–19.<\/p>

In the first round, Detroit faced the New York Knicks, the East’s No. 3 seed, in what became one of the most intense and entertaining series of the year- featuring game-winners, wild comebacks, scuffles, and even referee controversies. The Pistons ultimately fell 4–2, but they left the postseason with their heads held high.<\/p>

A Quiet Offseason for Detroit<\/h2>

Detroit’s offseason was relatively quiet, though that doesn’t necessarily mean the team is taking a step backward. The Pistons did lose some key veterans in Dennis Schroder<\/a>, Malik Beasley, and Tim Hardaway Jr., all of whom provided valuable shooting and experience on the perimeter.<\/p>

In their place, the team added Caris LeVert and Duncan Robinson, two capable scorers but inconsistent performers, especially in high-pressure moments, and neither is known for strong defense. So, while Detroit may have weakened slightly on paper, the return of Jaden Ivey and another year of growth from the young core could balance things out.<\/p>

Expectations for 2025–26<\/h2>

The upcoming season shouldn’t look drastically different from 2024–25. The roster is thinner, but with Ivey’s return and another year under Bickerstaff’s system, Detroit remains solid. However, the Pistons won’t catch anyone by surprise this time, opponents now have a better understanding of how to play against them.<\/p>

Detroit should still compete for a top-six playoff seed in the East, but it’s fair to say they aren’t quite on the same level as the Knicks or Cavaliers yet. To close that gap, one of the young players will need to take a major leap and form a consistent one-two punch with Cunningham.<\/p>

Is Jaden Ivey Ready for a Breakout Season?<\/h2>

Fourth-year guard Jaden Ivey could be the difference-maker for Detroit this season. He appeared in only 30 games last year before suffering a fractured left fibula, but before the injury, he was averaging 17.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4 assists per game while shooting over 40% from three — a critical improvement for the team’s perimeter spacing.<\/p>
