Heading into last season, the Boston Celtics were the clear favorites to win the championship, with a chance to become the first franchise to capture back-to-back titles since the 2018 Golden State Warriors. However, it was evident from the offseason that the competition would be much tougher than in 2023–24, as teams like the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Oklahoma City Thunder had all strengthened their rosters to challenge Boston.<\/p>
Even so, expectations remained high since the Celtics hadn’t lost any key players from their core rotation. The problem was that, in the early months of the season, the team’s stars were clearly fatigued. Jayson Tatum, Jrue Holiday, and Derrick White barely had any rest after the NBA Finals before heading off to play in the Paris Olympics. Meanwhile, Kristaps Porziņģis was still recovering from a rare foot injury and started the season sidelined, while Jaylen Brown struggled to find his rhythm.<\/p>
As a result, by January, the Celtics had yet to hit their stride and watched the Cavaliers dominate the Eastern Conference, practically locking up the No. 1 seed. Things finally turned around after the All-Star break, though Boston went on a 22–5 run to close the regular season, the second-best record in the league during that stretch, finishing 61–21 and securing the East’s second seed. Tatum’s growth as a leader and the team’s renewed intensity made them look unstoppable again heading into the playoffs.<\/p>
Unfortunately, injuries and illness struck at the worst possible time. Porziņģis battled a viral infection that affected his stamina and forced him to miss several games, Jaylen Brown played through severe knee pain that required injections, and Jrue Holiday suffered a muscle strain that cost him playoff games.<\/p>
Even with all that, the Celtics handled a tough Orlando Magic squad in the first round, winning 4–1. Next came the Knicks, and despite all the injuries, Boston entered as the favorite. Yet in Games 1 and 2, they built comfortable leads only to see Jalen Brunson and company storm back in the fourth quarter to steal both wins in Boston. The Celtics were far above the “second apron,” a strict luxury tax threshold that heavily penalizes teams exceeding it. Boston was facing nearly $500 million in combined salaries and tax penalties, along with several competitive restrictions. Given that Jayson Tatum will miss almost the entire season, effectively taking the team out of title contention, staying above the cap made little sense.
