The heavyweight division in the UFC has always been unpredictable, but the Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall saga takes the cake for pure frustration. For over a year, fans watched this title unification bout get teased, promised, delayed, and eventually cancelled in the most anticlimactic way possible. Jones held the undisputed heavyweight title while Aspinall sat as interim champion, which in UFC<\/a> terms usually means they have to fight to sort things out. <\/p>

But Jones kept finding reasons to avoid the fight, and the whole situation became a messy game. Now fans are learning just how much this chaos affected Aspinall personally, as he revealed the toll this whole mess took on him behind the scenes.<\/p>

Tom Aspinall Reveals The Mental And Physical Toll Of The Jon Jones Fight<\/h2>

Aspinall became interim heavyweight champion by beating Sergei Pavlovich at UFC 295 in November 2023. This should have guaranteed him a unification fight with Jones. But Jones had other plans, constantly finding excuses to avoid the fight while still holding onto his title. The British fighter found himself in limbo, unable to defend his interim belt against other contenders because the UFC kept promising him that the Jones fight was coming soon. Talking to TNT Sports, this is what Aspinall said: <\/p>

“We’d start the training camp, the intensity would up and then the date would get moved. That happened like three or four times and then eventually he retired. So it wasn’t like I was literally sat waiting for the full year, I did think the fight was going to come.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>
