The Boston Celtics’ record breaking $6.1 billion sale to a group led by private equity executive Bill Chisholm is set to finalize within the next week, according to Front Office Sports. The deal, which is the largest for a North American sports franchise, has overcome initial concerns about NBA private-equity ownership rules and is now “oversubscribed,” which ensures sufficient funding going forward. Chisholm’s group will acquire over 51% of the franchise initially, with the full sale completing in 2028. Despite a rival bid from minority owner, Steve Pagliuca, the transaction is on track for NBA approval by June, with Wyc Grousbeck staying as the CEO through 2027-2028.<\/p>

Further Details of the Celtics’ Historic Sale<\/h2>

The sale values the Boston Celtics at $6.1 billion, surpassing the $6.05 billion Washington Commanders deal which happened in 2023. Chisholm, managing partner at Symphony Technology Group, leads a group including Sixth Street Partners, Rob Hale, and Bruce Beal Jr. Early concerns were there as Sixth Street’s contribution reportedly exceeded that of Chisholm, which conflicted with NBA rules requiring the controlling owner to hold at least 15% and no private-equity firm to be the largest stakeholder. However, according to Front Office Sports, the deal is now compliant and Chisholm’s group has secured enough capital to meet all the requirements.<\/p>
