Open wheel racing is as terrifying as it can be considering the lack of protection around the drivers. Formula 1 does employ various safety measures to take care of their drivers. However, the cars are still not safe in case of massive crash or a fire. The recent Formula 1 regulations are much stricter. This means that the teams cannot modify their cars to forfeit any safety measures.<\/p><p>The last Formula 1 death occurred in 2014. Jules Bianchi was the driver who unfortunately lost his life due to injuries from his crash at the Japanese Grand Prix. Bianchi&rsquo;s pushed forward a revolution in Formula 1. The Halo was introduced and since then, it has saved many lives in the years after its addition to cars.<\/p><p>But before Bianchi&rsquo;s accident, Formula 1 had suffered a tragedy at the Imola GP 1994. This led to the death of two drivers during a single weekend. It was arguably one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article\/memories-of-imola-94-by-david-tremayne.3TAfAr9DIfuKevdoHbv3R1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"trk-cta-link\" data-cta-trk='{\"ctaType\":\"Link\",\"ctaSubType\":\"main\"}'>worst and most emotional tragedies of Formula 1<\/a> racing.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Remembering the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A7bZvHh8lRg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Imola GP 1994- The Weekend Which Shook Formula 1<\/h2><p>The Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit, famously known as Imola, is a dangerous track for many reasons. But the Tamburello corner is the most infamous portion of the track. The weekend was already under a lot of controversy due to the use of the &lsquo;launch control&rsquo; system by the top 3 teams. Formula 1 asked Benetton, McLaren and Ferrari to forfeit the launch control system. But, no one was ready for what was about to befall the track on the weekend.<\/p><p>On Friday, Rubens Barrichello crashed at the Variante Bassa corner at the speed of more than 225 kmh. The impact sustained forces of 95Gs on Barrichello and his car was airborne. He rolled several times before his car crash landed upside down. Ayrton Senna was particularly shaken and decided to stay by his side until he gained consciousness.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Remembering Roland Ratzenberger who tragically lost his life during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix weekend<br><br>Always in our thoughts &#10084;&#65039;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/F1?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\"trk-cta-link\" data-cta-trk='{\"ctaType\":\"Link\",\"ctaSubType\":\"main\"}'>#F1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qLURe2qbpC\" class=\"trk-cta-link\" data-cta-trk='{\"ctaType\":\"Link\",\"ctaSubType\":\"main\"}'>pic.twitter.com\/qLURe2qbpC<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Formula 1 (@F1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/F1\/status\/1917497904471892459?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\"trk-cta-link\" data-cta-trk='{\"ctaType\":\"Link\",\"ctaSubType\":\"main\"}'>April 30, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>According to Damon Hill, driving for Williams-<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><strong>&ldquo;We all brushed ourselves off and carried on qualifying, reassured that our cars were tough as tanks and we could be shaken but not hurt.&rdquo;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote><p>Hill was proved terribly wrong on Saturday. In the qualifying session, Roland Ratzenberger, a rookie driver for Simtek, crashed into the Villeneuve curva owing to his faulty front wing. The survival cell of his car remained largely intact. However, he suffered a basal skull fracture due to the impact with concrete. Striking the wall at 300 kmh, he registered an impact of 500Gs. It is the highest impact ever registered in a Formula 1 crash. The extent of his injuries- a basilar skull fracture, blunt trauma from the front-left tyre penetrating the survival cell and a ruptured aorta, caused his death on spot.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Doomed Start to The Race<\/h3><p>It was as if the Imola GP 1994 had descended from hell. The race-start itself was tragic. JJ Lehto stalled his car and Pedro Lamy drove his Lotus into the back of Lehto&rsquo;s Benetton. Senna was crying on chief doctor Sid Watkins&rsquo; shoulder after the incident. Watkins tried to persuade him to not race the following day. But Senna unwillingly decided not to quit. As is turns out, Senna kept an Austrian flag with himself in order to pay homage to Ratzenberger.<\/p><p>The Imola GP 1994 commenced on Sunday. Senna started the race on pole position based on his lap times on Friday. He was particularly struggling with his Williams since the start of the season. Michael Schumacher was behind Ayrton Senna and while defending against Schumacher, Senna faced a terrible failure. Going into the Tamburello corner at 305 kmh, his steering wheel did not turn the car. Ayrton Senna was dead on impact. He suffered injuries due to blunt trauma. Initially, he was airlifted to the nearby hospital.<\/p><p>The first impressions were that Senna might survive. However, two hours after the race ended Senna was declared dead.<\/p><p>The entire paddock was mourning Roland Ratzenberger&rsquo;s death during the podium.
