Alex Verdugo&rsquo;s offensive struggles only worsened as the year went on, and the fact that he remains unsigned suggests he wasn&rsquo;t exactly seen as a key piece for a World Series contender.<\/p><p>To be fair, I&rsquo;ve been tough on Verdugo. Despite his offensive shortcomings, he&rsquo;s a solid defender, something I&rsquo;m appreciating more now, given what I&rsquo;ve seen from Jasson Dom&iacute;nguez in left field.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Another tough play for Jasson Dominguez in left field: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/y4Z011aa9h\" class=\"trk-cta-link\" data-cta-trk='{\"ctaType\":\"Link\",\"ctaSubType\":\"main\"}'>pic.twitter.com\/y4Z011aa9h<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Bryan Hoch &#9918;&#65039; (@BryanHoch) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BryanHoch\/status\/1895187706990510088?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\"trk-cta-link\" data-cta-trk='{\"ctaType\":\"Link\",\"ctaSubType\":\"main\"}'>February 27, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>Verdugo already has the captain&rsquo;s backing, even after posting a .233\/.291\/.356 season at the plate. He committed just one error all year, finishing with a .997 fielding percentage. He&rsquo;s still young, makes consistent contact, and, most importantly, the Yankees have a glaring need right now.<\/p><p>Verdugo could continue <a href=\"https:\/\/theplayoffs.news\/en\/yankees-power-deficiency-would-be-exposed-if-giancarlo-stanton-is-absent-from-lineup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"trk-cta-link\" data-cta-trk='{\"ctaType\":\"Link\",\"ctaSubType\":\"main\"}'>waiting<\/a> for the right offer, or, as a known Aaron Judge favorite, he could play his cards right and help his old team at a time when they need it most.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jasson Dom&iacute;nguez&rsquo;s defensive struggles<\/h2><p>Dom&iacute;nguez has struggled in left field, which isn&rsquo;t surprising given that he&rsquo;s traditionally a center fielder. You could argue that a center fielder should be able to handle left, but his early struggles raise questions about his overall defensive ability.<\/p><p>Of course, his offensive upside is what makes this situation interesting. In his brief MLB debut, he showed flashes of brilliance at the plate. If that was just a glimpse of what he can do, then maybe his defensive woes are a trade-off the Yankees are willing to accept. Dom&iacute;nguez is struggling in left, Giancarlo Stanton is injured, and the alternatives aren&rsquo;t exactly inspiring.<\/p><p><strong>ALSO READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/theplayoffs.news\/en\/yankees-power-deficiency-would-be-exposed-if-giancarlo-stanton-is-absent-from-lineup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"trk-cta-link\" data-cta-trk='{\"ctaType\":\"Link\",\"ctaSubType\":\"main\"}'>Yankees&rsquo; power deficiency would be exposed if Giancarlo Stanton is absent from lineup<\/a><\/strong><\/p><p>No matter how you feel about Verdugo, wouldn&rsquo;t you rather see him back in the lineup than watch Trent Grisham stationed next to Dom&iacute;nguez on Opening Day? Last September, Verdugo&rsquo;s presence was a roadblock for the young outfielder. This time around, he could actually be a safety net.<\/p><p>Of course, it would be very on-brand for the Yankees to bring him back now, only when he&rsquo;s blocking Dom&iacute;nguez, rather than when he could have helped share the load. There&rsquo;s no clear sign that the Yankees feel pressured to shake things up just yet. But if Dom&iacute;nguez stumbles a few more times, they might have to reconsider giving him a softer landing spot. And if that moment comes, Alex Verdugo will be waiting.<\/p><p>It&rsquo;s what he&rsquo;s been doing all winter.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Phillies and Alex Verdugo a potential match?<\/h2><p>The Phillies are running it back with eight of their nine starters from last season, while rival teams, like the Mets, have made significant upgrades.<\/p><p>Some may question whether Verdugo is worth adding after his lackluster 2024 campaign, but his elite defensive ability and outfield versatility remain valuable assets.
