The situation became more bitter when Johnson, upon joining the Bears, praised the team and the city.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bears made Ben Johnson their top priority<\/h2><p>Johnson&rsquo;s interest in the Bears dates back to the 2024 hiring cycle, but Matt Eberflus was retained at the time. By 2025, however, Chicago&rsquo;s offer was undeniable: a young quarterback in Caleb Williams, three top-75 draft picks, and the sixth-highest salary cap space in the league. The Bears also heavily emphasized their team culture and quarterback development plan during the interviews. Johnson&rsquo;s passion for the job was evident from the start. Under his leadership, the Lions finished in the top five for scoring over three seasons, peaking at 33.2 points per game this year.<\/p><p>But Johnson wanted the Bears to understand that he was more than just an offensive guru. During his press conference, he explained, <em>&ldquo;I really wanted to let those people know on every call&hellip; there was more substance than maybe I articulated in any media session or what you might see on the sideline.&rdquo;<\/em><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Ben Johnson chose the Bears<\/h2><p>Johnson didn&rsquo;t shy away from the Bears&rsquo; recent instability. Since 2011, the franchise has hired five head coaches and won just one playoff game. But Johnson saw potential. In his words, <em>&ldquo;This place is special.
