The signing of pitcher Corbin Burnes<\/strong> by the Arizona Diamondbacks, made official last Saturday, was one of the offseason’s biggest surprises in free agency. According to The Associated Press<\/a> on Thursday (2), the $210 million, six-year contract includes deferred payments beyond the duration of the agreement.<\/p>

Out of the total sum, Burnes will receive $64 million between 2031 and 2036, with $10 million paid in the first two years and $11 million in the remaining four.<\/p>

In 2025 and 2026, Burnes will earn $20 million annually (plus a $10 million signing bonus in the first season), with an option to opt out after the two years. If he chooses to stay, he will make $24 million annually until 2030.<\/p>

The deal also includes performance bonuses: $250,000 for winning the Cy Young Award, $150,000 for finishing second, $100,000 for third, $75,000 for fourth, and $50,000 for fifth place in voting.<\/p>

Additionally, Burnes will receive $50,000 bonuses for selections to the All-Star Game, MLB<\/a>’s First or Second Team of the Year, winning the Gold Glove, and earning MVP honors in the World Series or NLCS.<\/p>

As part of his contract, Burnes is entitled to four free tickets to all home games (including Spring Training, regular season, and postseason) in the best available seating area, with the option to purchase two additional tickets.<\/p>

He will also have access to a private suite for team road trips and will donate 1% of his salary and signing bonus to charity.<\/p>

For his first two years in Phoenix, Corbin Burnes has a full no-trade clause. If he remains with the team in 2027, he can submit a list of 14 teams to which he cannot be traded without his consent.<\/p>

Strengthening the Market<\/strong><\/h2>

The acquisition of Corbin Burnes is part of the Diamondbacks’ strategy to improve their standing in the National League West. Along with securing a new ace for the rotation, the team also traded for first baseman Josh Naylor from the Cleveland Guardians.<\/p>

Although the Diamondbacks reached the MLB Finals in 2023, they failed to make the playoffs last year. The team plans to blend these new acquisitions with young talents like catcher Gabriel Moreno and outfielders Corbin Carroll and Alek Thomas as they aim for a postseason return.<\/p>
