Jae’Sean Tate was born on October 28, 1995, in Toledo, Ohio, to Jermaine and Jenice Tate. He has three siblings: Jalen, Jada, and Jocelyn. His father, Jermaine, was also an Ohio State athlete, averaging 12.1 points per game for the Buckeyes in 1996. Outside of basketball, Tate enjoys video games and graphic design. He attended Pickerington Central High School, where he excelled in both basketball and American football. However, a shoulder injury led him to focus exclusively on basketball. During his high school career, he was ranked as the No. 1 player in Ohio and one of the top 15 power forwards in the country in his class.<\/p>
Tate played college basketball for the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Big Ten Conference from 2014 to 2018. As a freshman (2014-15), he played in all 35 games, starting 16, and averaged 8.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He finished the season fourth among freshmen in Ohio State history in single-season field goal percentage at 58.9 percent and was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. In his sophomore year (2015-16), he started 28 games before missing the last seven due to a shoulder injury. He averaged 11.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game, and tied for the team lead with 35 steals, while shooting 52.1 percent from the field. As a junior (2016-17), Tate led the Buckeyes with 14.3 points per game and ranked second with 6.4 rebounds per contest. He also recorded a team-high 34 steals and ranked third on the team with 64 assists, hitting 54.7 percent of his field goal attempts. He was an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention as a junior and a second-team All-Big Ten selection in 2018.<\/p>
After his collegiate career, Jae’Sean Tate went undrafted in the 2018 NBA draft. Despite this, he began his professional career overseas. From 2018 to 2019, he played for the Antwerp Giants, where he was a Belgian League all-star and helped lead the team to their first Belgian Cup title in 12 years. In 42 league games, he averaged 10.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. He also averaged 13.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 24 BCL games. On July 22, 2019, Tate signed with the Sydney Kings of the Australian National Basketball League (NBL) for the 2019-20 NBL season. During his time with the Kings, he averaged 16.4 points, 2 assists, and 5.8 rebounds per game and was named to the All-NBL First Team.<\/p>
Jae’Sean Tate eventually joined the Houston Rockets in 2020. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2021. For the 2024-25 NBA season, Tate made 52 appearances (two starts) for the Rockets, averaging 3.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 0.9 assists. On July 1, 2025, Tate re-signed with the Rockets on a one-year, $3 million contract. He currently wears jersey number 8 for the Houston Rockets and primarily plays as a small forward. Despite his listed height of 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m) and weight of 229 lb (104 kg), Tate sometimes played as a center during his time with the Buckeyes.
