Timberwolves vs. Lakers: LeBron James breaks Kobe Bryant’s record for most missed shots in NBA history

The King sets a new record he'd likely rather forget.

LeBron James set a less flattering NBA record during the Los Angeles Lakers’ season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves, becoming the all-time leader in missed field goals with 14,482. James surpassed Kobe Bryant’s previous mark of 14,481 misses when he missed his sixth shot of the game in the third quarter.

The historic miss came on a contested transition layup, defended by Wolves guard Donte DiVincenzo.

Despite the negative connotation, this record underscores James’ extraordinary career longevity and offensive dominance. Only players who are elite and heavily involved in their team’s offense can amass such a high number of attempts. James, in his 22nd NBA season, continues to play at an elite level, a testament to his durability and skill.

Other greats like Bryant, who held the record previously, and numerous Hall of Famers populate the all-time leaderboard for missed shots. Such players took—and missed—so many shots because they were relied upon as primary scoring options. James will likely add to this record as he continues to play, potentially becoming the first player to miss 15,000 shots.

James’ record is not one any player would aim for, but it reflects his unmatched career longevity. It sits alongside his remarkable milestones, like being the first player to score 40,000 points.

LeBron and Bronny James make history

LeBron and Bronny James made NBA history on Tuesday, becoming the first father-son pair to play together in the league. During the Los Angeles Lakers’ season opener, the 39-year-old LeBron joined his 20-year-old son on the court with just under four minutes left in the second quarter, prompting cheers from the crowd.

LeBron, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, teamed up with Bronny, who was drafted by the Lakers in the second round last summer.

During their 2.5 minutes on the floor together, LeBron missed two jump shots but made a dunk, while Bronny grabbed a rebound and narrowly missed a tip-in. Bronny’s first NBA shot, a 3-pointer, also came up short, but he received applause when he checked out with 1:19 left in the quarter.

LeBron had spoken about his dream of playing with Bronny years ago while his son was still in high school. That dream came true after Bronny declared for the draft following one season in college, and the Lakers selected him with the 55th overall pick.
