Bronny's performance in Lakers' preseason finale prompted him to speak of his potential.
Lakers icon Magic Johnson recently shared his perspective on Bronny James’ NBA future, offering a positive outlook amid the young guard’s recent challenges. Despite facing intense scrutiny from fans and critics over his summer league and preseason performances, Johnson believes Bronny could carve out a role with the Lakers.
On his X account (formerly Twitter), Johnson emphasized Bronny’s potential, noting that his unique skillset and basketball IQ are attributes that can’t be taught.
“I have to tell you Bronny James is going to be a really good basketball player,” Johnson said. “He showed he has a few things you simply can’t teach-high basketball IQ, athleticism, and a competitive spirit that makes him a tenacious defender!”
“I believe after a lot of hard work this season, he’ll definitely be in the Lakers’ rotation and playing heavy minutes.”
Bronny James made a notable impact in the Lakers’ preseason finale against the Golden State Warriors. Despite the team’s lopsided 132-74 loss, James delivered an impressive stat line with 17 points, four rebounds, and three steals, catching the attention of many.
It was this performance that prompted Johnson to speak up about Bronny’s potential, especially in the context of the Lakers’ roster. Johnson hinted that with continued development, Bronny could become a reliable player for LA.
In a follow-up post, Johnson drew comparisons between Bronny and former key Lakers role players like Alex Caruso and Austin Reaves, suggesting that James could follow a similar path and be a crucial part of the Lakers’ future rotation.
“Basketball fans, Bronny James is in good hands with the Lakers, who are great with developing talent. Two names that I can name recently that I’ve seen firsthand are Alex Caruso and Austin Reaves, who both are starters in the league today. Bronny will be next.”
Caruso, now poised to start for the Oklahoma City Thunder, began his NBA journey with the Lakers as an undrafted free agent from Texas A&M in 2016. He played a crucial role in helping Los Angeles secure the 2020 NBA Championship.
Since his 2021 trade to the Chicago Bulls, Caruso has established himself as one of the premier defenders in the league. His tenacious play has earned him back-to-back All-Defensive Team honors in the past two seasons, solidifying his reputation as an elite perimeter stopper.
Austin Reaves, also an undrafted gem, came to the Lakers from Oklahoma in 2021. Last season, he thrived as a starter, posting career-high averages of 15.9 points and 5.5 assists, emerging as a key piece of the team’s future.
Now, Bronny James will look to follow a similar trajectory with the Lakers.
