Bears send Herbert to Cincinnati for a 2025 seventh-round pick; Herbert’s limited 2023 season ends as Bears lean on Swift and Johnson.
The Chicago Bears plan to send running back Khalil Herbert to the Cincinnati Bengals, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. The Bengals will give the Bears a 2025 seventh-round pick in return for Herbert.
Herbert is in the last year of his first contract, and he hasn’t played in the last two games while the Bears are using a combination of D’Andre Swift and short-yardage back Roschon Johnson. This season, he only has 8 carries for 16 yards and a touchdown, as well as 2 catches for 4 yards in 6 games.
Selected in the sixth round in the past, Khalil Herbert adds a strong aspect to Cincinnati’s offense to support Chase Brown in the running game. During his time in Chicago for four seasons, Herbert accumulated 1,791 yards and nine touchdowns. This season, the 26-year-old was relegated to the bottom of the depth chart, having only eight carries for 16 yards and a touchdown.
The Bears will continue to advance with D’Andre Swift, Roschon Johnson, and Travis Homer leading the way from the backfield.
Khalil Herbert switched from playing college football at Kansas to playing at Virginia Tech in 2020. Herbert was selected by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft. Over four years, Khalil Herbert has participated in 48 games and started in 12 of them.
He has accumulated 1,791 yards and nine touchdowns from 372 carries, with an average of 4.8 yards per carry. In the passing game, he has contributed 45 catches for 291 yards and two touchdowns.
Herbert is in the last year of his initial contract after being picked by the Bears in the sixth round in 2021. The Bengals will be responsible for paying approximately $555,000 of Herbert’s base salary since the Bears have already covered half of his $1.05 million total salary for this season after he played eight games. The Bengals will be responsible for the remaining nine games.
Despite the trade, the Bengals are expected to maintain a cap space of approximately $8.5 million, allowing for additional acquisitions.
Hopefully, Herbert will find success in Cincinnati. The Bengals backfield has been consistently plagued by injuries. He will have the opportunity to play alongside Joe Burrow, which seems exciting when Cincinnati’s starting quarterback is performing well.
