Hutchinson’s leg twisted awkwardly as it collided with a teammate, forcing him to be carted off the field during the Lions’ dominant 47-9 victory over the Cowboys. His injury is expected to impact the team’s defensive lineup for the foreseeable future.
Hutchinson went down in the third quarter when his left leg hit his teammate Alim McNeill’s leg while pulling down Prescott. The injury appeared severe as his leg bent above the ankle.
Hutchinson was immediately ruled out with what the team described as a “lower leg injury.” The Lions’ coaching staff later confirmed he would remain in Dallas for surgery.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed his concern after the game. “He’s in good hands right now,” Campbell said. “Obviously, he’s going to be down for a little while. So that’s tough, man. It’s hard when you lose somebody like him.”
Players from both the Lions and Cowboys surrounded Hutchinson as he was carted off, wishing him well. Teammate Alim McNeill also commented,
“I didn’t know if it was him or not, but I did feel somebody like leg-whip me, and then I see Hutch down. That’s wild to see. I hate that for him.”
With Hutchinson sidelined, the Lions are facing a shortage of edge rushers. Isaac Ukwu, the top backup edge rusher, will likely step into Hutchinson’s role, while Josh Paschal and James Houston provide further depth.
The team was already thin at the position after free agent Marcus Davenport suffered a torn triceps earlier in the season. Hutchinson’s absence, which may be extended, will likely push the Lions to explore additional options to strengthen their edge defense.
The recovery time for a broken tibia depends on the severity of the fracture. According to Healthline, recovery can take as little as four months for less serious fractures, but more severe cases might require at least six months.
Aidan Hutchinson’s health and the nature of his injury will determine how quickly he can return to the field, but the Lions will need to prepare for an extended absence
