O que esperar do Los Angeles Lakers nesta temporada?
Darvin Ham foi treinador dos Lakers nas últimas duas temporadas. Ele alcançou os playoffs e foi derrotado pelo Denver Nuggets em ambas as campanhas, com o confronto de 2022-23 sendo disputado na final da Conferência Oeste e o da temporada passada na primeira rodada dos playoffs.
Apesar de ter somado recorde positivo de 90-74 e ter conquistado a edição de estreia da Copa NBA, o treinador seguia pressionado pelas instabilidades que o time apresentou ao longo do campeonato e por tomar decisões controversas em momentos decisivos de seus jogos.
Com a saída de Ham, os Lakers sondaram o head coach Dan Hurley, que liderou o UConn Huskies a dois títulos consecutivos no basquete universitário, mas recebeu uma negativa do profissional. No final, o nome contratado foi o de J.J. Redick, ex-armador da NBA que não possui experiência como treinador.
Redick é uma aposta arriscada da franquia de Los Angeles, que não possui parâmetros concretos para medir se o técnico possui a capacidade de comandar o time ou possui uma proposta de jogo condizente com o elenco atual. A contratação se torna ainda mais arriscada quando levado em conta que a passagem de LeBron James, principal jogador da equipe e maior esperança para a conquista de um título, está chegando ao fim.
Indiscutivelmente um dos maiores jogadores da história do esporte, o ‘’King’’ assinou uma renovação com o time na offseason e entrará em sua 22ª temporada na NBA, completando 40 anos em dezembro de 2024. O astro não demonstra estar perdendo seu ritmo de jogo mesmo com a idade avançada, tendo iniciado o maior número de partidas em uma única temporada regular com a camisa de Los Angeles no último ano (71) e ter liderado a equipe em média de pontos (25,7) e assistências (8,3) com um 41% de eficiência no perímetro.
Ao lado de James, o pivô Anthony Davis também segue como uma das peças fundamentais para as pretensões de título dos Lakers. Membro do All-Defensive Team de 2023-24, o ‘’monocelha’’ é o grande pilar defensivo da equipe com sua capacidade de proteção do aro. O atleta se manteve saudável ao longo da campanha e registrou 2,4 tocos (quarta melhor marca da liga) e 9,7 rebotes defensivos (segunda melhor), além de não decepcionar no setor ofensivo com 24,7 pontos de média nas 76 partidas que disputou.
Sendo donos de duas superestrelas, o que resta para os Lakers se tornarem um dos candidatos ao título da NBA? O primeiro ponto a ser melhorado certamente é a rotação, que frequentemente é sabotada por lesões de seus principais jogadores. Nomes que poderiam complementar o banco da equipe – e até mesmo possíveis titulares – como Jarred Vanderbilt, Cam Reddish, Christian Wood e Gabe Vincent foram desfalques durante grande parte da última temporada.
Na offseason, Taurean Prince e Spencer Dinwiddie saíram e enfraqueceram ainda mais o elenco. Os reforços vieram somente via Draft, com a seleção de Dalton Knecht e de Bronny James, este filho mais velho do ‘’King’’.
Ambos os novatos devem ter participação reduzida no elenco principal, mas Knecht surge como a principal promessa por suas qualidades ofensivas em todos os espaços da quadra. Bronny, por sua vez, se destaca defensivamente, mas ainda precisa evoluir seu aproveitamento em quadra e controle de bola.
A defesa é o segundo ponto que precisa ser trabalhado por Redick. Na última temporada, os Lakers tiveram a sétima marca da liga em média de pontos cedidos (117,4) e a quinta pior defesa de perímetro (oponentes registraram média de 37,6% de aproveitamento no setor). Os Lakers certamente demonstraram melhora caso Vanderbilt se mantenha saudável, mas adições poderão ser necessárias durante a temporada.
Por conta disso, Los Angeles é uma das principais equipes candidatas a trocas durante o próximo campeonato. D’Angelo Russell, que ativou a renovação automática de seu contrato na offseason, é o nome que surge com mais frequência em rumores. O armador anotou médias de 18 pontos, 6,3 assistências e 41,5% de aproveitamento nos chutes de três em 2023-24, mas costuma decepcionar com suas atuações nos playoffs.
Completando o quinteto titular, Austin Reaves e Rui Hachimura também são destaques do elenco e devem desempenhar importantes funções ao longo do ano. O armador fechou a última temporada com médias de 15,9 pontos, 5,5 assistências e 4,3 rebotes com 48,6% de eficiência nos chutes, enquanto o ala-pivô teve 13,6 pontos e 4,3 rebotes.
Mesmo com setores a serem melhorados e as incertezas com relação ao novo comando técnico, os Lakers seguem como candidatos a uma vaga direta nos playoffs por conta da dupla Anthony Davis e LeBron James. Resta saber se as superestrelas serão suficientes para guiar o time até as rodadas finais do disputado mata-mata da Conferência Oeste.
